०२The second wing

Small is not simple. Twelve chairs deserve the same drawings as six hundred. They just hide nothing.

The second wing of the house is the private calendar: the evenings that do not arrive with a wedding attached. Some years it is a single proposal on a rooftop. Some years it is forty children in a garden, a fortieth in Tuscany, and a chef’s table for twelve on a barge in the same season.

The same studio. The same Taloja works. The same forty-sheet drawing set, scaled to the room.A celebration is where the house is most exposed, because there is nowhere for a guest’s eye to hide. So we build them most carefully of all.

Eight ways to gatherwithout a wedding.

०१

Engagements

The first evening of a wedding is an engagement, and the house treats it that way. A glasshouse of two hundred roses, a single long table, the two families seated to actually speak to one another. We design the room so the announcement lands once, cleanly, and is photographed before the cake is cut.

A rooftop dinner for two at dusk, a small table of candles against the city skyline
A proposal, for twoPL. 48

०२

Proposals

A proposal is the smallest commission the house takes and one of the most exacting. A rooftop, one table, forty candles, a maître d' who has rehearsed the sequence twice. The ring is yours to carry. Everything around it is ours: the lift that does not stop on the wrong floor, the music that begins on a nod.

०३

Anniversaries

Twenty-five years, forty, the quiet first one after a hard year. Anniversaries are built backward from a single moment the couple keeps returning to, and the room is dressed to hold it. We have rebuilt a wedding mandap in a courtyard in Tuscany for two people who married under its first version in Bombay.

०४

Baby showers

Daylight, soft colour, and somewhere quiet for the mother to sit when the room gets loud. The house keeps these gentle on purpose. A conservatory, a low table of flowers grown for the season, a guest list short enough that everyone is spoken to. Nothing in the room asks the guest of honour to perform.

०५

Bridal brunches

The morning before the wedding, held away from the build. Lemon, linen, a citrus garden, and a menu Chef Meera Pillai writes to be eaten slowly. It is the one event in the wedding week the bride is allowed to be a guest at, so the house staffs it heavily and keeps the bride's own family off the service rota.

A children's day, the gardenPL. 30

०६

Children's days

A child's party that the adults also want to be at. The house designs to a height of three feet first and then dresses the rest of the room up for the parents. Real food, a garden, one beautifully made thing to look at rather than ten plastic ones. The afternoon ends before anyone is overtired, which is the whole craft.

Chef's tables

Twelve seats, one chef, a menu written for the room and the night and no one else. Table & Cellar builds these around a single ingredient or a single cellar, and the kitchen is brought to the table rather than hidden behind it. The house has run a chef's table on a barge, in a godown, and once inside a closed museum.

०८

Cinema nights

A film, outdoors, with the sound built properly and the seating built for two hours rather than two minutes. The house programmes these like a small festival: a print worth showing, a supper that arrives at the interval, festoon lights timed to come up as the credits roll. Rain has a plan. It always rains on the good ones.

“It was twelve people and a dinner. They drew it like it was four hundred.”

Some celebrationsleave the city.

A milestone birthday on a deck off Alibaug. A fortieth at an island resort, forty guests flown in over two days. When a celebration travels, the house travels whole: a production manager on the ground a week early, the cellar shipped in temperature-controlled crates, and a plan for the one boat that will not start on the morning it matters.

The water adds a day to every plan and takes nothing off the standard. Before a single invitation is sent, we counsel hosts honestly on what a remote site can and cannot hold: power, kitchens, the last ferry.

The atlas of where the house travels
०५The longest tables

Some hosts we have keptfor seventeen years.

The house has built an engagement, a wedding, two anniversaries and three children’s days for the same family. The first was in 2009, the most recent this spring. The private calendar is how a host and a house come to know each other: the chef who remembers the allergy, the production office that already has the floor plan of the family home on file.

Roughly two in three celebrations the house takes in a year are for a host it has built for before. We do not chase that number; it is simply what happens when a room is drawn for the people in it rather than for a photograph. The longest tables are the returning ones.

An evening, by hand, for the people in it.
