The Signature

The Varenne Solitaire

LOT 0001 · 5.02 ct · D · FL

One stone, the colour of clear water and the weight of a vow. Cut for fire over eleven months, raised in platinum by a single setter, and recorded to the hundredth on its certificate.

One · The Stone

Read by eye, and by report.

A five carat round brilliant of the rarest grade the maison keeps. D colour, the absence of any tint. Flawless, no inclusion the loupe can find. We chose it not for the number on the scale, but for the way it gathers a room into a single point of light.

Every Varenne stone arrives loose, presented with its certificate and its lot number, the four Cs set down to the hundredth. Nothing is asserted that the report does not hold.

Two · The Setting

So the stone sits in light, not in metal.

The mount is built around the report. Six platinum claws are raised by hand, each one filed to hold the girdle and then withdrawn until only the smallest line of metal touches the stone. The gallery is left open beneath, so light enters from below and leaves through the table.

There is no machine pass at any stage. The setter works under the loupe across several sittings, burnishing each claw until it returns light rather than catching it. What you wear, in the end, is the stone, with the platinum reduced to the quietest possible argument for holding it.

We cut for fire, not for weight. The setting only keeps the promise the rough first made.

Inside the atelier

Three · Provenance

A single stone, with an account of itself.

The rough was acquired through the maison's own channels, recorded against the Kimberley Process and carried under bond to the bench in Mumbai. It was studied for weeks before the first facet, then cut, polished, assayed and struck with the Varenne mark and its purity stamp.

It carries the lineage of a house with two homes: a European discipline of the cut, and an Indian patience with the hand. Founded in 1908, the maison has set every signature stone the same way, and kept the record of each.

Four · In the Vitrine

Shown the way light first found it.

The Varenne Solitaire is kept under a single beam in the flagship vitrine, turned by hand at first light each morning. It is not for the window display. It is shown, one client at a time, to those who ask to see it.
